Awareness Session on Preventing Violence, May 2018

Toys such as plastic gun and sword are considered as a tool to instigate violence. However, GFTE believes that educating kids of the disadvantaged communities about the negative consequences of the original weapons is important to keep them away from violence. We gifted plastic sword to children and had a brainstorming session. Through vicarious method, we informed them about the difference in plastic and original sharp objects. They also outlined the objects available at their home. We further taught them skills such as negotiation and conflict resolution skills to use at the time of anger. We guided them to keep themselves away from sharp objects. Through autobiographical approach, children revealed how their father or relatives had used sharp objects to beat them. One of them shared, "My father beats my mom with chain and also cuts her with knife whenever she disobeys him. Another child promised, "I will never use any sharp objects to hurt others. Rather I will talk to resolve issues... I will also keep sharp objects away from my younger brother"
